A Service-Oriented businesses is one in which your work and revenue is primarily based on your own labor or labor from a small team of employees. These businesses typically have a defined season of operation that is less than 1 year. Seasons repeat each year but are separate from a financial basis.
You setup services with default pricing. Each season, you associate your services with customers and override the default pricing based on the size and scope of the work.
You can charge your customers in 1 of 3 ways:
- Trip Based – each time you show up to do work, you bill your customer a fixed rate.
- Contract Based – you charge your customer a fixed amount for unlimited “trips” or instances of your services for the season.
- Hourly Based – your customer is charged an hourly bill rate multiplied by a variable number of hours that it takes for each service.
As part of service delivery, you can optionally charge for additional items:
- Materials –These are free-form, line item level charges. An example might be a “hourly” based spring cleanup service in which you put down new mulch bedding. Here you would add a line item called “mulch” with the cost you wish to charge the customer.
- Products – These are like materials, but they are a set of products and pricing defined upfront. An example here would be a “firewood business” in which your service is a “trip” based delivery of firewood, but you need to charge for the firewood as well. You may have several sizes of firewood each with a different price.
